Fixed pawn
A pawn that can't advance and can't be defended by another pawn — a permanent target.
A pawn becomes fixed when it's blockaded and has no neighbouring pawn to support or trade it. Because it can't run, pieces can gather around it at leisure — the essence of the strategy 'fix the weakness, then win it'.
Isolated, backward and doubled pawns all become serious weaknesses precisely when they're fixed on a square where enemy pieces can attack them.
Winning plans in slow positions almost always start by fixing an enemy pawn as a target — a fixed weakness doesn't defend itself.
Attacking a weak pawn before it's fixed, letting it advance or trade itself off and dissolve the target you were building against.
