Pawn majority

More pawns than the opponent on one wing — the raw material for a passed pawn.

If you have three pawns to two on the queenside, that majority can be mobilised to manufacture a passed pawn. The healthiest majorities are ones the opponent can't easily blockade or match.

A queenside majority is especially prized in endgames when the kings are castled kingside — you make a passer far from both kings.

Why it matters

Recognising your majority tells you where to play: roll those pawns to create a passer, ideally where the enemy king isn't.

The mistake everyone makes

Advancing the majority carelessly and letting it be blockaded, or creating a passed pawn the enemy king easily stops.

A pawn with no enemy pawns able to block or capture it on its way to promotion.
