Pawn storm

Advancing a wing of pawns en masse to blast open lines against the enemy king.

When kings castle on opposite sides, both players often throw their pawns forward on the side where the enemy king sits — a pawn storm — to prise open files and diagonals for the pieces. It's a race, and a tempo can decide it.

The storming pawns must usually not be blocked; you want to force open at least one line, then pour the heavy pieces through.

Why it matters

Opposite-side castling turns many games into pawn-storm races; knowing how to storm — and how fast — is the difference between mating first and being mated.

The mistake everyone makes

Storming with your own king still in the firing line, or advancing pawns that just get blockaded, opening nothing.
