Endgame

Wrong rook pawn

A rook's pawn plus a bishop that can't control the promotion square — a notorious drawn exception.

With a bishop and a rook's pawn (a- or h-file), if the bishop does not control the pawn's promotion square, the ending is drawn no matter the extra material: the defending king simply sits in the corner and can't be driven out. The bishop is the 'wrong' colour for that pawn.

It's one of the most important known exceptions in the endgame — a whole extra piece and pawn can be a dead draw. Recognising it stops you from trading into a drawn ending or missing a saving resource when defending.

Why it matters

This exception overrides normal material counting — knowing it saves lost games and stops you heading for a 'winning' ending that's actually a draw.

The mistake everyone makes

Trading down into a bishop-and-rook-pawn ending a full piece up, only to find the defender's king holds the corner forever.
