Open file

A file with no pawns on it — ideal territory for rooks.

Rooks are long-range pieces that do nothing behind their own pawns. On an open file they can penetrate to the seventh rank, tie down the enemy, and dominate.

A half-open file (pawns of only one colour) is the next best thing, and a natural place to attack the opponent's pawn.

Why it matters

Getting a rook to an open file, then doubling rooks on it, is a standard winning plan in countless middlegames.

The mistake everyone makes

Leaving your rooks on their starting squares all game while the opponent seizes the only open file.
