Opening principles
The starter rules: control the centre, develop pieces, castle early, don't move the queen out too soon.
The principles are shortcuts that keep you out of trouble before you know specific theory: occupy or control the centre with pawns and pieces, develop knights and bishops toward the centre, castle to safety, and connect your rooks.
They are guidelines, not laws — strong players break them for concrete reasons — but breaking them without a reason usually just loses time.
Following a handful of principles will get you a healthy middlegame in almost any opening, without memorising lines.
Chasing the opponent's pieces with early queen sorties and getting the queen kicked around, losing tempo after tempo.
